Grassfed levy probe hears beef industry angst over 'no choice' of source of beef

Citing a 2013 report by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, officials have said, "The report has documented that some of the beef sold in New York City is naturally grass-fed with minimal additives, and that most of the animals are raised using humane, non-toxic methods." The report said that the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (DDAOM) has determined there are not "zero" sources of beef in the state.

The DDAOM's 2012 report said: "Cattle raised in humanely treated and environmentally sound agricultural settings are among the most healthful animals and pose no health concerns in their natural environment." A separate report released by the Agriculture Department in October 2011 confirmed that the National Grassfed Sheep Association, which represents grass-fed beef producers, claims there are no natural grass-fed cows. "It is important to note, however, that there is no known biological link between grass-fed animal and beef that is not present in conventional beef," said one of the report's authors, Dr. Jeffrey Brown, president and chief executive officer of the National Grassfed Sheep Association, which claims that some of its grass-fed cattle have been infected with ruminants. "As a result of the limited information available to the public, DDAOM has not released its new survey or updated its review of the cattle industry to better inform consumers and assess our options to determine if there may be a need for new regulation."

However, despite the lack of "no choice" in the public's eyes, meat consumption has tripled under President Obama in the years between his campaign promise and taking office. Since taking office, according to the USDA, U.S. meat consumption has increased seven times from 2005 to 2010.

In response to concerns that public consumption of beef products may rise if the food tax-and-regulations legislation is passed, the National Pork Producers Council, which represents the United States' biggest meat producer, issued a letter Wednesday to Sen. Jon Tester, a Montana Democrat who is the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee and who is a champion for reform and better regulation of the US meat industry. The letter argues that the tax provisions in the bill are "designed to generate greater efficiency for the nation's meat producers."

While the industry supported the administration's proposed food tax and meat inspection regulations during the 2012 election campaign, some beef industry representatives said the food stamp and beef inspector general initiatives are part of a larger effort to undermine the meat industry. And as the USDA noted in its report, the USDA's beef inspection program is only one part of a larger effort to reduce the amount of beef produced across the United States, and the meat industr

Lithium teething troubles put workforce on shaky ground

Korean and Japanese companies face a dilemma in managing high levels of unemployment, as the number of new applicants for skilled positions continues to rise, but wages of workers struggling to make ends meet are increasing too.

"Some countries are adopting policies that lead to employment problems, which are costly, as opposed to solutions which are good," said Chiranjeevi.

He also believes that there is a disconnect between policy makers and the actual numbers of unemployed in many countries around the world.

"If this problem is fixed, then it will eliminate, not only the number of jobs, but also the amount of the unemployed as well."

Suspected rebels cut noses off 5 kashmir civilians when they captured an ISIS checkpoint in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district today, leading to an outbreak of bloody incidents in the Valley and causing fears of growing unrest across South Asian nation.

According to a report in the Indo-Asian news service Hindustan Times, some 500 residents of Kailas district were seen crossing over to India at the time, sparking clashes between the locals and attackers.

"A group of suspected ISIS militants stormed into the village of Kulgam along with their two local commanders from Shillong who were on a patrol, causing an uproar among the local residents and sparking fierce clashes between the villagers and the suspects on the ground," the report stated.

"Two of the locals were killed and five others were injured when a grenade landed close to one of them, leading to the deaths of three villagers and the injuries of the remaining 12 who were treated for shock," it added.

Local news report said two local officers, a boy and a girl, were among those killed while a child sustained minor injuries.

The Indian army has made a huge number of raids in Kailas district this month to arrest ISIS members in the area. At least 10 ISIS operatives have been killed and 14 others injured while security has also been stepped up in many districts, which has led to a spike in the number of such incidents.

The army has also announced it was taking down the ISIS flag in their wake. While the flag reportedly was seized during the fighting, the army did not specify when and how the flag was taken.

Earlier this month, two civilians were killed in Jammu and Kashmir when suspected ISIS fighters opened fire on army posts along the border crossing at Kulgam and opened fire in a village called Panna.

It remains to be seen whether an upsurge in such incidents is due to the increased insecurity facing the State in particular, or if the situation is being blown out of proportion. The Indian Army has yet to comment on the incident.

Tomago upbeat in the face of aluminium industry downturn, in contrast to her predecessor, then-Prime Minister Sir Johan Vesey who, with Tony Abbott, had set out a blueprint for a 'green Australia' with high carbon emission reductions – just one year before she got sworn into office.

The Liberal Party had also endorsed the green economy.

And if the carbon tax was "green", why were the coal plants being shut?

In May, an internal Liberal Party report revealed that the coal industry "has experienced rapid growth and may not be sustainable over the foreseeable future".

"The government needs to invest more in renewables" rather than "the coal industry", said the memo, which was leaked to the Australian media.

According to the leaked memo, mining company Macquarie was expected to make an extra $1 billion in 2014-15, with the bulk to come from coal at its Hazelwood processing facility on the Port of Darwin.

In fact, the coal industry was also forecast to make $15 billion in the next three years to keep electricity output rising.

Cuts to coal, including those implemented under the carbon tax and also the proposed $12-billion upgrade of the state's rail fleet, were also predicted to cause an expected 40 per cent drop in the company's production of coal by 2050, according to the memo.

Coal imports had dropped almost 15 per cent in the six months to mid-December 2013, according to data compiled by the Australian Energy Market Operator.

'Green Australia' versus'red Australia'

By late November last year, a survey by Australian Institute of Sustainable Energy and Resources (AIRR) showed that "the Green Party still had an overwhelming advantage" over the two major parties in terms of economic policy.

When it came to "how we spend our energy resources".

According to the survey, "the green/red debate about what we should do about the carbon issue has been effectively deadlocked, with the Green Party winning on issues of funding for clean energy, renewables and climate change mitigation".

In July, the government had taken more than a year to begin work on a new national plan to reduce Australia's carbon emissions.

And despite the recent carbon tax announcement by Premier Barry O'Farrell and the promised upgrades to the rail fleet, there is still no plan to invest any more in coal.

"The Coalition has failed to build a real green economy, one that is driven by public support, a balanced portfolio of investments in clean energy, in infrastructure and innovation," the AirR report said.

'Climate deniers'

Mr Abbott, a climate change sceptic, has also said that he would scrap the carbon tax if there were no new revenue i

Groves wants legal battle moved to family court, but legal arguments are difficult.

The lawsuit is in federal court and asks for more than $20 million. The family is still fighting that lawsuit in New York.

But a judge in New Jersey ordered them to turn over records about the marriage.

"That is pretty much a litmus test: Does it follow the law? The answer is yes, in terms of the law," Williams said.

In the lawsuit, the lawyer for the couple says she's never been in a legal case before.

Her name will be redacted in the lawsuit so it won't appear it's part of the same case.

1. I am a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The Academy is not a committee or anything like that. The main point of the report is that vaccines lead to autism. 2. The CDC and I are opposed to all forms of violence against women. 3. Some of my doctors work in an office in Texas. I work at a place called the National School Nurses Association, and the president of it has worked for the federal government for a long time. 4. The reason I write about vaccines is because I see it as a potential danger to the public. I was diagnosed with Lyme disease when I was 10 years old. I was on antibiotics, and it really affected my quality of life. For the past 6 years, I have been on anti-inflammatories, but I don't know if I have recovered all of it. I was also taking a vaccine. The doctor who prescribed it said that if I were to have another relapse, I wouldn't be able to keep the anti-inflammatory medication. 5. The problem for me is that I am not vaccinated against tetanus and diphtheria and influenza. There's nothing to say I cannot get those infections but not the more common forms of those illnesses. And that's where the anti-vaccination stuff gets very frustrating. 6. We have a lot of studies about children who are sick because of vaccines getting sick. When you look at how they're taught. We teach children and students and families to hide vaccines in baby bottles, so there's no way the doctor can get them. But if you do have a child who gets sick, we teach that they're supposed to stay home. 7. There are plenty of examples of vaccines causing autism, including the chickenpox vaccine that was used in this study. 8. There are no adverse side effects, no reports of vaccine injury that I can find from vaccines. I don't think this is scientific evidence of harm from vaccines. And that's the thing about vaccines, that you can look at the data for years and see nothing in front of your nose. And all that goes out the window when you get a really bad allergic reaction and your child's immune system is compromised. The only time that comes out is if the child's immunocompromised and has severe respiratory problems, brain damage, or death. And that's a much more dangerous situation. 9. It's a pretty common misconception that vaccines cause autism. And I don't know who's perpetuating that misconception. That's true. The CDC is aware of a lot of problem

Emerald developer celebrates bulk store win

The store, located at 2821 South Main Street on the campus of South Pasadena's Montclair State University, is one of more than 200 such stores around Los Angeles.

"It's been kind of fun doing these bulk store games. I feel like a kid playing Minecraft with his friends," said Timo Kärkkö, the store's founder and chief development officer.

The game is a combination of speed games like "Skateboarders," co-hosted by The Onion Wire and the video game magazine Videogame Showroom, along with "Bulk Pickup," which features players with varying strengths trying to grab as many items as possible before they are left holding an empty container of candy.

Players who have "purchased" the bulk box will receive an assortment of new items.

Kärkkö has had to battle a lack of attention.

"We've got a ton of customers," he said. "I wouldn't say that people stop coming in every night. We do have one or two days where we close up, and we do have some people who come back. But it's pretty frequent, I guess."

A bulk store isn't necessarily the same as a vending machine. It's almost impossible to find a cart and a vending machine.

But because the bulk stores cater to low-income families who can't afford the traditional mass merchandisers, they're able to offer a "chill out" experience for residents like Kärkkö.

There are also a limited number of the store's games — a mix of competitive and multiplayer game play — but none are big enough to turn customers away. Customers can play against fellow residents and each other on the internet. The bulk store has an entire game, which is not meant to compete directly with online gaming systems like the ones that power online video games such as "World of Warcraft."

The bulk store also offers items like soda, coffee and sandwiches, at prices comparable to what a local bar offers.

"It's something that could be used to give them something to look forward to instead of getting bored on weekends," said Kärkkö. "You could sit around the house and play and have a good time."

Prince harry and meghan markle arrive at windsor castle, a former prison for wizards. Harry was sentenced to be chained down in the dungeons. However, the Warden escaped and brought back the other prisoner, Hermione Granger, along with a scroll from the Room of Requirement, and then he was freed. Now Harry and Ron return to the castle to rescue harry. Meanwhile, Dumbledore announces that he is going to destroy Harry. Harry and Ron escape from the castle and head north to Hogwarts. Harry returns to the castle, only to find it completely destroyed by his nemesis. Ron is also killed by a basilisk. Harry decides to use Hermione's book on a spell for protection and uses it on himself. After a spell is cast, Harry is transported in a transfiguration room and later returns to the castle to find Ginny, who is in Azkaban for a week for breaking the spell she created. He then learns that Dumbledore had been looking for the Harry Potter books but didn't notice the destruction in the castle until after he had left. He also learns that the last book he was able to find was in the trunk of the tree that destroyed his house and also finds the potion Hermione gave him. This gives him a clue to the location of the books, even though Dumbledore refused to tell him where. Ginny is at first reluctant to tell him about where she had been, but finally agrees when Harry asks her if she knows what had been written in Harry Potter. When she agrees, he thinks that she is referring to the Deathly Hallows. Harry decides to use some of his wizarding powers to locate the books, which lead to them being found on the bottom floor of the library in the house they share with Ron and Hermione.

During that time, Ron discovers that a letter was sent to Harry in which he revealed what his father said had happened to him. Harry had been punished by the order of the Potters, a war that was not his fault. Ron's letter revealed that Dumbledore had gone to Azkaban for breaking the spell he had cast to protect himself and for having sent him to Azkaban for being a coward and coward's father.

Ron then learns that both his parents were killed when Voldemort killed them, which is what his father had told him. Ron then realizes that they all had something to do with their parents having died and is confused why it had happened that Ron and Ginny had been killed so easily.

After Voldemort returns the diary, Harry uses it to destroy the prophecy to destroy the world with magic and Harry does so. He then realizes that he's been transported in time, to 1999, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Hermione, whom Harry was able to kill earlier, takes Ron and Harry to where the diary is. She tells them that the

Fed treasury head defends inflation target

The Fed governor said he hoped for a more upbeat outlook in the United States over the next 12 months.

"There are signs that we have recovered more fully from the economic crisis that we experienced in late 2008," he said. "But we can and should hope that the next 12 months in this country -- and particularly in markets in the Midwest -- are more favorable."

Obama has signaled he's not ready to go as far as Paul, saying, "We believe we are close to reaching our 2 percent inflation goal, which we plan to stick to as long as possible."

On the Fed's benchmark interest rate, Fed vice chairman Stanley Fischer, speaking at an International Monetary Fund conference in Chicago on Sunday, said he expected the goal to stay at 0.25 percent, based on the fact that a low rate of inflation is essential to a healthy financial system and to spur economic growth.

It's hard to imagine a scenario where the central bank would change that goal or push it higher if it weren't for the fact that some in Congress, including many Republicans, have expressed concerns.

Paul noted on Fox News Sunday that he was willing to increase the Federal Reserve's holdings of longer-term US Treasurys, as long as the policy isn't too tight.

A few days later, the Fed also announced $100 billion of new direct-funding tools for countries with troubled financial systems.

The money will be used to help stabilize the region, especially if those nations fail to find alternatives to the global banks' policies to prop up their economies.

Man charged over margaret river assault, denies attempted murder

Updated

Queensland police have charged a 45-year-old man over an assault in March on a woman who said she was attacked with a margaret river.

The incident occurred on March 7 and Ms Burt suffered a broken shoulder after she fell from a window ledge during the incident.

In March, the man accused of throwing the punch was released on bail.

In April, detectives charged him over his involvement in another attack on the woman.

In August, police arrested a man accused of driving recklessly after knocking on the door of the victim's home and assaulting her at the house, where the attack occurred.

Police say they do not believe the other woman assaulted was aware her house was being broken into and did not expect she would be assaulted.

Two sex accused granted bail in waif and pregnant with twins

Woman has been jailed for three years after admitting to a string of offences at a court in Glasgow

A pregnant teenage woman who claimed she slept with as many as five men and had sex with one man has been jailed for three years.

Nurse Alesha Schiells, 19, of Blackpool, Glasgow, admitted three counts of indecent assault and one count of indecent assault by penetration.

Sentencing, Judge Paul Whelan said: "The offences involve sexual activity by you and some of them involved you having sexual contact with one man.

"The victim was in a relationship with her boyfriend and I was worried she might have felt threatened by it. I was also concerned about her health and she has now started drinking.

"You were in a relationship with the victim, who in your case was in a relationship with someone different to you. There were sex acts but I think they are not related. The victim was not in a relationship with you and in the relationship there was no sexual intercourse."

Crown attorney Stephen Brousseau called the offences "gory" and said: "It is a horrific abuse of a child."

The first offence involved Schiells taking part in sexual activity with the victim when she was 16-years-old. The second involved Schiells and the victim engaging in "physical penetration."

Schiells denied the charges at the hearing in Glasgow Supreme Court in October 2014. But she admitted the "sexual conduct" count against her when she was 18-years-old, as well as four indecent assaults against women and one count of rape in November 2015.

She added: "It is a tragic story and I deeply regret the impact it has had on my girlfriend and friends. I now feel like I can't see her for the rest of my life, in all that I have gone through.

"I hope and pray that the courts will find some mercy for the victims of this crime."

Schiells will also be sentenced in February next year.

The 18-year-old, now named in court reports only as N.L., was born to an Indian mother and Scots father but she had a foreign father who was a citizen of Zimbabwe. She had two sons and one daughter with her husband, a former police detective.

Crown prosecutor Paul Ritchie said: "I fully recognise that people of a lower socioeconomic background may be embarrassed in this way but if they are young in the wrong relationship and young in your particular context, these things are serious."

Judge Whelan said: "I have come to accept that this was a serious case to tak

As it happened third test day four days later, there is a bit of a lack of detail regarding what exactly is happening to the ship that could affect this whole thing. It seems like the ship will be at sea but the only thing we can see is the side hatch and maybe a hatch on the side of the boat. In my opinion, I believe the reason to take the second test is to see if we can actually get some sort of information out about the other ships and get a better sense of the situation and the danger environment on the station.

The two ships are also quite similar in terms of the look, and of course, they have the same crew on board, so if the same issues arise on either ship that will also effect that.

So right now things aren't too certain but at the least, we see that the situation is getting more desperate.

Mh17 the images that illustrate the downed planes fate were not included in the report. In fact a second report called the reports "contrived" and "false", and did not mention this incident. However that did not mean they had been produced at a low level of information and that the report was just "incompetent". It was the responsibility of the investigating agency to ensure that the information is properly presented, and the agency in this case, it appears, did not perform this. Further, in the wake of the reports, the NTSB sent a memo that it did not intend to prosecute the officials responsible for this incident, despite what the media reported. This was, however, not enough, despite the fact that the report that resulted has been retracted by NTSB.

Another example of falsified evidence came from the media. The 9/11 Commission Report stated in its appendix that the images that showed the collapse of the north tower had been processed by an official NTSB photo editor, but the images that showed the collapse of the south tower did not. This meant there was no official image of the collapse of the south tower. In this, the "official" media reported, "uncontracted" personnel responsible for the image processing was a "non-employee" (i.e. "not on duty") - thus the picture of the collapse of the north tower was made up of "reconstructions" - that is, a composite of several photographs - shot before the collapse. However, there was an official image that was presented to the Commission, even though that photograph showed the collapse of the south tower. Again, the only picture of that collapse that the "investigating agency" could see was that of that official "non-employee". In addition, the "investigating agency" made up a fake image of debris being pulled out of the north tower and then used it as "evidence". This means that the official photographs from the collapse of the south tower were "fabricated" and were in fact faked images that appeared to show a crane pulled out of the ground after the collapse. The official photographs also had holes and other issues. In this instance, in fact, no official photographs of the collapse of the south tower were produced, as the investigation itself would not produce them. In spite of these examples, the 9/11 Commission's own investigation found that none of the photographs of the collapses had been "examined" in the way they should have been.

The "official" news media, however, was so convinced that the official photographs of the collapses of the north and south towers were genuine that it published "fake news" that it reported on the false "conspiracy". Indeed, the entire 9/11 coverage was "re-worked" to fit the storyline i

Study shows how sharks can thrive in areas where there are no man-made barriers," says David Riebel, the lead author of the study.

In this study, which uses a specially designed underwater cameras, Riebel and colleagues collected 2.3 tons of shark fins from the Gulf of Mexico for study. At first, when the researchers first showed the fins to a group of local fishermen who came to study in February, they felt excited. "These guys were hooked, and they were just looking for sharks and were fascinated by them and would not let go, and they were very keen on looking at them," Riebel says.

But eventually, the fishermen got fed up and decided to leave. Riebel and his team asked fishermen in the area about the sharks they saw, and they said they usually couldn't distinguish the species they saw from other sharks, but once they got them to leave, they knew immediately what sharks they saw.

This is exactly why people should be careful where they hang up their sharks, Riebel says. You can take out about 10 of these sharks at once, so it's unlikely you'll be catching many. There is also some risk with taking them in by the nose: The fins are slippery and vulnerable to scratching, which can even be fatal for a small child.

Now, Riebel's hope is that the study will help to develop new ways for scientists to study sharks at sea, such as using underwater cameras. The camera would show off all of the sharks swimming in and around one specific location, and provide the fish with more information about the shark, which might help them to predict the type they would find.

In many areas of the world, fisheries are not regulated as effectively as they should be, Riebel explains. For example, sharks are often caught by accident if fishing nets don't completely submerge the sharks. The researchers hope their study will help them do something about that problem, which costs the US$350 million a year, and could save around 15,000 lives a year. The team says it's looking forward to working with scientists around the world to figure out how to best study marine life.

"I am very excited for the research that we're doing and I want to be part of the next steps in that," says Jelena Kuchman, a biologist at the University of Florida who also coauthored the study. "If you think about it, it's a little bit like taking a pair of hands and you're using them both at the same time; the only difference is that you are not moving them, which brings us closer to our ultimate goal of finding new ways of using fish to study life."

Riebel's team published the results of their study in th

The Sydney siege

Australian authorities have warned they may reopen a siege in the eastern Australian town of Sydney at any time.

The situation is "very tense" in the city, which has seen a surge of people fleeing recent shootings and bombings in Australia.

The AFP is advising people to avoid walking through the busy northern suburbs of Newtown and Redfern.

It's understood that the gunman, 28, was shot dead after a car ploughed into a crowd of holidaymakers on a bike path.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has praised the police response, which she said had "given all of us pause".

Her office said the attacker was "allegedly armed with a shotgun".

It also said "he was shot by a police officer and transported to a hospital as a result of the incident".

She described the man as "violent and violent with no legal status".

In a televised conference, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull described the incident as an "unprecedented" attack which he said was the "domestic terrorism of 2016".

He added: "We are all thinking of the community... people who have just suffered a massive loss.

"It is also an attack on everything we hold sacred."

Cyclone debbie wreaks havoc on whitsunday islands.

Seal's father dies on a train. His body is recovered and placed in a coffin

Seal is taken to the museum for examination. It's revealed that this is another false memory, the fake one, with

the rest of the incident rehashed. In a later episode in the TV series, S'haan goes undercover and tries to convince

the crew to return the money they stole from them during a robbery

in the area. As a result of her role, S'haan starts to question herself

about what she did during those times. As a result, she also questions the validity

of her role in the incident.

However, S'haan has come back as a major character, much to the audience's and the viewer's satisfaction. As

a result, she also becomes a source of much discussion and discussion between many

contemporaries and various writers.

A special note about the film, which you may recall from earlier articles: S'haan and N'Thal

were filmed together on SBS's new show which aired earlier this month. That's probably what people

refer to as "the old days"!

This story has never been explained as such, the film's director, and the director himself don't like to

say exactly why the film is called "Sailors" or why they decided to name the ship after this woman.

What has come up in this piece, though, is S'haan's relationship with N'Thal, because that's how she came

back with the money stolen by the pirates. And why this woman is called "Sailors".

Now, let's examine her story. Here's what I have:

2) S'haan and N'Thal were in a small vessel, that had four crewmembers onboard: S'haan, the captain, N'Thal, her brother,

and her lover. S'haan and N'Thal were crew members for a foreign government company.

At some point, during the crew's trip home, one of them started seeing someone she liked. They all wanted

to know if this person was a sailor.

On one of their missions, they left a note, saying that this person needed money, to cover expenses such

as rent and food, and asked them to put money together.

3) It was around then that S'haan and N'Thal realized something. They decided that, even though this

person was a sailor, he/she had something else to offer.

Inquest told man shot 4 times by police was'very calm and quiet'

A man has been charged after he allegedly shot four police officers to death in a police-involved shooting in San Francisco, prosecutors said.

A man and two females were killed after an investigation into an incident in the 6200 block of Washington Street, police said.

A 27-year-old man was charged Monday with four counts of first-degree murder and a total of 17 counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said investigators received a 911 call at about 2 p.m. Thursday from the victim who said a suspect was attacking police officers on the ground near Washington.

The man, who was not named by police, was sitting in a car with two of his female friends.

The suspect then entered the car and shot four police officers from behind it.

The three wounded officers were taken to an area hospital, but they all suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Suhr said.

Police said two of the wounded officers were taken to the hospital, while the other two died.

A fourth officer, a woman, is listed in critical condition, Suhr said.

Mayor downplays council ceo quitting and insists she will remain on byelection

Mayor Lisa Helps, who defeated former councillor and Tory councillor David Heap, said the campaign "will continue" but warned that councillors "will be challenged on every single issue and everyone will feel the brunt of the outcome" but said she would remain on byelection.

Asked by reporters about the council's decision to oust its director of strategic research, the mayor claimed: "I don't think anyone wants me to resign because of my position. I think the people of this city want me to stay.

"I'm here to serve them for the next five years but it has to be a long term commitment and I intend to make that commitment."

The mayor said she believed the public had been hurt by council's inability to resolve matters involving the public-private collaboration with the company, that had led to the council decision to remove its director and said she has a "positive view of the council process" but will work to "improve the office of public safety and public works".

Official poet to be well versed in sydney's history

Diane T. Dorsett, a former secretary in the Department of the Environment for the NSW Parliament and a former professor of African and African American Studies at New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology, will become the first member of the national council of poet laureate committees to serve as a national poet laureate. Her nomination was announced by the NSW Parliament in the Senate on Monday.

"When I decided to participate in this project, I didn't have any other choice but to follow in his footsteps," said Ms Dorsett. "I have seen the effects that this has had on people's lives and on the nation's understanding of it."

The National Assembly's poet laureate committee is made up of more than 3,000 Australians and is chaired by Ms Dorsett and will be led by former prime minister John Howard. It consists of a committee comprising nine nominated individuals, including a poet laureate appointed by Ms Dorsett. The committee will consider letters, research papers and other materials that are eligible for inclusion in the national poet laureate selection process, which is reviewed by a panel of national poets in collaboration with the Department of Culture and the Library of Parliament.

In her letter, Ms Dorsett said her inspiration to take part in the National Library of Australia Fellowship was partly due to "the unique way people have interpreted the word poetry". She said it was "the most powerful language that people are using to communicate about what it means to be a good and beautiful person and about a nation in the 21st century". She continued: "My dream is to write about the history and development of this nation."

Solomons minister denied bail, however, and has been charged with possessing a firearm.

A bail application by Mr. Dutton's partner, Christine Smith, had to be dropped following a court hearing late on July 23.

"It seems to be a really, really bad case," said Justice John MacKenzie, QC for the High Court, who noted that Mrs. Dutton was the subject of an ongoing psychiatric assessment by psychiatrists. "It's pretty disturbing that we've got this kind of thing going on, and when it comes to psychiatric assessments there is a real lack of capacity in this court."

The Crown argued Mr. Dutton was entitled to bail given the age, but Justice MacKenzie said it had failed to provide the same level of care as required under the Mental Health Act and he would refuse bail.

The case will now proceed to trial next month, where the judge will decide whether the charges should be tried as a civil offence, or an indictable offence and, if so, whether the court can order bail.

The legal costs would run to $4,500.

"It's going to be a tough case," said Mr. Dutton's brother Mark. "The court is pretty much set. It's going to be a lengthy and very emotional case."

"It's not only me," said his father, Peter. "We've got the family here, so all we know is that we'll be here with the media and family. I hope we don't get up here and find out there's an investigation."

Mr. Dutton was released on bail on July 24 after he had been waiting for a couple of weeks and was found to be "not an imminent threat to public safety" during a routine post-conviction examination.

Bail was initially set at $300,000 for breaching conditions of his bail. But Mr. MacKenzie said Mr. Dutton's bail application was dropped by the Minister's Office and on Monday he was released for another appearance.

"There's no need for him to go back into custody. He's free to walk around as he pleases," Justice MacKenzie said.

In his brief, Mr. Dutton described the case as a "tragedy of unprecedented proportions" and described it as being caused by his "inadequate care."

"For almost a year I have tried to get better," Mr. Dutton said, and had been held against his will by the police. "The police just sit there watching over me."
